Haida Laas 2021 Issue: HaiCo Update
In 2021, HaiCo started working on renewing business plans to align their objectives with HaiCo’s original mandate, which, in part, is to grow the business enterprise with the goal of creating a sustainable economy on Haida Gwaii. This means examining the business goals, objectives and values and aligning them with values that are culturally based. Part of this examination is also to convey direction and changes to citizens in a timely manner.
The pandemic hit Haida Tourism hard with Haida House being able to only maintain minimal operations for the hotel and restaurant business. On the plus side, work with drop-in clients was able to proceed with expanding accommodation at the site. A series of longhouse-style cabins with ocean views were built and are ready for use.
Ocean House, once tethered at Stads K’uns Gawɢa Peel Inlet, has been relocated near Tlaga Gawtlaas New Town. Before opening at its new location in 2022, the lodge is being renovated. This new location will afford better access to a more diverse clientele and provide access to the rest of Haida Gwaii.
Taan Forest has managed to operate through the rolling COVID-19 restrictions with some limitations.
HaiCo will continue to engage with citizens about its companies strategic planning. Kilslaay Kaajii Sding Miles Richardson has been reappointed for another term as chair of the company.
Haida Wild is currently managing PICFI fishing licenses and quotas for Haida citizen fishing opportunities. Haida Wild is exploring options, but has no plans to re-open its processing plant at this time.
